RENEWABLES WEB ATLASES LAUNCHED AS PART OF BIOENERGY SYSTEM

As part of a larger bioenergy mapping and modelling solution, we have redeveloped the Sustainable Energy Ireland atlases for wind energy and geothermal energy. The Web Atlases were completely redesigned and redeveloped with a new hosting infrastructure also established.  The WebGIS were developed using largely open source software with supporting Microsoft operating system and database (SQL Server 2008).  We have also made extensive use of OGC WMS Web Services to serve datasets into the atlases.

The larger bioenergy element of the project is also completing and is supporting the assessment of bioenergy targets for Ireland.  It incorporates land suitability, production, cost and other modules that are part of an overall framework that allows extension of the system over time, with added complexity in modelling within each module, if so required.  The bioenergy system is an intranet system supporting the work of a national bioenergy working group.
